The Tanana River officially went out today (May 26th) at 10:53PM, Alaska Standard Time. According to the folks at the Nenana Ice Classic this year winners will share a jackpot worth $303,895. In the 92 years since that first guess more than $10 million in prize money has been paid to lucky (or talented) guessers.

What began in 1917 as a group of Alaska Railroad employees wagering on when the ice in the Nenana River would go out has turned into an annual event that draws curious visitors and would-be Ice Classic winners from across Alaska and around the world.

A wooden tripod is erected on the ice, roughly 300′ feet from shore with a trip wire attached to a clock that will record the very second the ice in the Nenana River gives way. The winning times will be announced along with the lucky winners as soon as the Ice Classic can contact each one. The payoff will be made on June 01, 2008. If you have the winning ticket, don’t delay in contacting the folks at the Ice Classic.
